St. John Ambulance War Service Badge

1914-1920
War Service Badge

Measurements: 28mm x 54mm
Material: Brass with Enamel

This War Service Badge was issued to British St. John Ambulance members who saw war service. The badge design incorporates the symbols of the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance. During the two world wars, the two organizations formed the Joint War Organization to provide aid and limit duplication of effort. Their badges and publications during the wars featured both organizations’ emblems.

The Badge features a suspended bar with the county name “DURHAM”, denoting the holder’s county of origin. Other examples of this Badge feature not only counties within the United Kingdom but also countries throughout the Empire with established St John Ambulance units. The reverse of the Badge has the stamped serial number “4930”.
