The Therapy Dogs Program has been one of the most visible services of St. John Ambulance in Ontario since 1992. It began as a pilot program in Peterborough and has spread across Canada. The dogs bring comfort, joy, and companionship to members of the community who are sick, lonely, or reside in long-term care and mental health facilities. The dogs go to hospitals, schools, libraries, airports, and places where terrible tragedies have occurred.

The Museum has three out-of-print therapy dog books. They are:

Henry’s There to Care by Karin McLean, 2022. Karin McLean is a children’s book author and artist, as well as the owner of therapy dog Henry. She wrote and illustrated Henry’s There to Care, which shows Henry visiting patients in hospitals and bringing them comfort and joy.

The Adventures of Pal the Therapy Dog. This is a children’s book showing therapy dogs visiting people in a variety of settings.

Pet First Aid Manual. This first aid manual for pets was published in association with the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
