Bernice Wingrove (nee Robertson) donated this photograph of a first aid class at her school, Carleton Village Public School, Toronto, in 1944 or 1945. The girls had to be at least 12 years old to take the course.
Bernice is first on the left in the front row. Her sister Shirley, though not formally taking the course, was in the class too. In a letter to St. John Ambulance, Bernice wrote:
“My sister Shirley was our mascot. She wanted to be part of the group, so they allowed her to attend, and we used her to practice our bandages, etc. She is sitting on the floor in front of the group (at that time she was only 9), but she came every week with me.”
The school is now called Carleton Village Sports & Wellness Academy.
