Wooden Maltese Cross and Clock

Wooden Cross Clock
Wooden Cross Clock

This wooden carving of the Maltese cross of the Most Venerable Order of St. John was found at the Toronto Region office. There is a clock mounted at the top, and the brass plaque reads “ST. JOHN AMBULANCE TORONTO BRANCH”. The Museum Committee has no documents stating who made it or why it was made (yet). It could be an example of what museums and art galleries call vernacular art, that is, art made by self-taught or untrained artists who do not necessarily view themselves as professional artists.
